dude, no “jewish” religious background? seems like a serious omission unless my priors are all screwed up.

Donated $100 second time. Let’s raise that sanity waterline!
ETA: I like the random bonus idea. Suspecting one of the techniques is variable reinforcement? :)
MIRI is bottlenecked more on ideas worth pursuing and people who can pursue them, than on funding
Ideas come from (new) people, and you mentioned seed planting which should contribute to having such people in 4-6 years, seems like still a worthy thing to do for AGI if anything is worth doing for any cause at all (given your short timelines). If you agree what’s the bottleneck for that effort?
Sorry to hijack this Eli, but I don’t get why it’s not obvious that you should recuse yourself from moderation when there is strong appearance of personal rather than community consideration. Flag it to one of the other mods to consider.
It makes you look bad, whether or not the decision was well founded, and makes people question the fairness of the moderation process. Please don’t do this.
It’s not possible to make reality a safe and cozy haven, and trying to make it so will only cause harm.
I found an abandoned kitten once, brought it home, fed it to health and my mom found it a nice home. Have I caused it harm?

In the course of my life, I have often had to eat my words, and I must confess that I have always found it a wholesome diet.

Luke is really being too humble here. Clearly the events up to the atheist realization happened in the first 15 minutes of his existence, given a reasonable allowance for all the sources he read for his articles.

[Question] What are we predicting for Neuralink event?
Be helpful. I have built a significant network of useful people, and in many cases the relationship started from from me offering to do small favors—as small as helping put away chairs after a lecture—and striking up a conversation.
Addendum: while on occasion I use this technique consciously, there is some concern about seeming transparent (still don’t let this stop you, especially with unique opportunities at stake). Best reward yourself for being a helpful guy/gal, make it part of your self image. As your status grows it will be quite natural to offer help to important people (I once got the nerve to offer help to a very rich mayor of a major US city, as I had something to offer. Nothing came of it, but still).

Freud was incredibly popular because his work resonated with the experience of millions of people. Clearly he’s been validated: he didn’t need empiricism. Sometimes that happens with smart people. Not all of his ideas are right, but come on, it’s psychology, and much of biology isn’t right either.
Sorry if I’m being naive, but by this standard L. Ron Hubbard has been ‘validated’
I’ll tentatively accept that Dawes’ work has been spotty (I do suspect that there might be some side-effects from psychotherapy, not related to the main theories, that should have been picked up). My problem with Freud that some of his core theories (sexual desire for the mother being the prime example) might well be bunk (strongly suspect this due to evolution having no reason at all for such a thing), and he never cared to check.

Phew, I was really worried this was for some kind of SIAI kid-cloning experiment.

He was only a de facto mysterian: thought mind is so complicated that it may as well be mysterious (but ofc he believed it’s ultimately just physics). This position is updateable, and he clearly updated.
Request/advice: please consider taping the sessions. This will be useful to:
improve them in the future
package them as courseware, possibly for sale
Alternative: commute effectively. Taking a train to NYC from Long Island I get almost 2 hours to read/watch lectures or entertainment. Some days these are 2 best hours of the day.
