We definitely aren’t trying to say “any two ridges can be connected for any loss landscape” but rather that the ridges for overparameterised networks are connected.
I think we lose a lot of nuance by automatically assuming the boxed AGI will have godlike capabilities (though it certainly might). Attempting to contain such a super intelligence is (probably) impossible, but I suspect there’s still a fair bit of merit to the idea of trying to box near human level AGIs.

Can you explain how the discovery you’ve linked demonstrates “arbitrarily high computational power”. I’ve tracked down some of the papers they’re talking about but haven’t been able to find this claim.

I like assumption 1 and think its the correct way to think about things. I personally am think finding a true name for human morality is impossible.
Assumption 2 (linear capabilities ordering) strikes me as too strong. I’m not sure if this the correct ontology, with the “gaming” being quite a dynamic interactive process involving two agents modeling each other. It seems unlikely you will be able to rank performance in this task along a single axis.
Here is a rough sketch of where I think it fails:

To avoid misunderstanding, the kinds of “Pivotal Acts” you are talking about involve using an AGI to seize absolute power on a global scale. The “smallest” pivotal act given by Yudkowsky would still be considered an Act of War by any country affected.
The above is obvious to anyone who reads this forum but it’s worth emphasizing the magnitude of what is being discussed.
I understand your argument to be as follows:
A. A small group of humans gaining absolute control over the lightcone is bad (but better than a lot of other options).
B. But because it’s better than the other options, there is a moral imperative to commit a “pivotal act” if given the opportunity.
C. It is morally correct that this group then give up their power and safely hand it back to humanity.

The political landscape:
Most (all?) groups of humans that have seized power and stated paternalistic intentions toward the subjugated people have abused that power in horrific ways. Everyone claims they’re trying to help the world and most humans genuinely believe it. We’re fantastic at spinning narratives that we’re the good guys. Nobody will trust your claim that you will give up power nor should they.
If any domestic agency was to take understand your intentions and believe you realistically had the capacity to carry them out you would be (at best) detained. Realistically, if a rogue group of researchers were close to completing an AGI with the goal of using it to take over to world, then nuclear weapons would be warranted.
There is also going to be a strong incentive to seize or steal the technology during development. The hardware required for the “good guys” to perform a pivotal act will be dual use. The “bad guys” can also use it to perform a pivotal act.
The ideal team of fantastic, highly moral scientists probably won’t be the ones who make the final decisions about what the future looks like.
The moral landscape:
In the worlds where we have access to the global utility function, then seizing power to improve the world makes objective sense. In the world we actually live in, if you find yourself wanting to seize power to improve the world, there’s a good chance you’re closer to a mad scientist (though a well intentioned one).
I don’t know of any human (or group of humans) on the planet I would trust to actually give up absolute power.

This post serves to spread the idea that a unilateral pivotal act is inevitably the only realistic way to save humanity. But by writing this post, you’re driving up closer to that world by discouraging people from looking into alternatives.

I would suggest rethinking the quiz to make it faster to and easier to answer. Maybe just copy a format that already exists from a study on religious belief?
I am somewhat certain preDCA requires a specific human but there should be enough information recorded about anyone with a large enough digital footprint to reconstruct a plausible simulacra of them.
Keep in mind the ultimate goal is to get a good understanding of their preferences, not to actually recreate their entire existence with perfect fidelity.
I respect that you said at the start this was speculation.
You establish that aspects of human cognition and GPT are roughly similar, but then begin making strong conclusions about GPT using this lossy analogy.
This is akin to me trying to do mechanistic interpretability on a transformer by studying how humans “pay attention” to things.

Ok, you probably can’t do advanced deception with a bounded automata, agreed.
There could be any number of mechanisms that mean that GPT is getting information from words and context that isn’t readily apparent to a human overseer.
I don’t actually know if this true but it is plausible.
I do not buy this conclusion at all.
The first statement was a claim about “advanced” deception in systems without CoT. Once a system is powerful enough to perform human level AI research it is not at all apparent it isn’t going to be capable of doing some form of steganography, which is not necessarily “advanced” but is still good enough to fool humans.

In boxing, the jab is a punch thrown with your leading hand. It can serve to soften your opponents defences but most importantly it helps you to “range-find” ensuring you have a feel for exactly how far away your target is.
The cross is the power move. Usually thrown with the dominant hand. The punch is backed up with momentum from your entire body. Alignment, as I see it, is a one-two.
The jab is “The Hard Problem”. It’s us coming up with an actual strategy to prevent AGI from causing catastrophic harm and developing enough theory to allow us to generalise to tomorrows problems.
The two is us having the technical “oomf” to actually pull it off. The expertise in contemporary AI and computation power to actually follow through with whatever the strategy is. Both of these are deeply important areas of research.
To train cross? I can immediately find resources to help me (such as Neel Nanda’s great series). And my skills are highly transferable if I decide to leave alignment. You will have to work extremely hard, but you at least know what you’re trying to do.
Contrast this with trying to train the jab. There is no guide by the nature of what preparadigmatic means. Many of the guides that do exist, may just be wrong or based on outdated assumptions. An actual attempt at solving the hard problem will appear worthless to anyone outside the alignment community.
The fact that the majority of “alignment” organisations getting money are focused prosaic alignment does not mean they have bad intentions or that individuals working on these approaches are misled. However, we should all be very concerned if there is a chance that alignment research directions are being influenced by financial interests.
I certainly think some research to produce alignment assistant AI falls under this umbrella, unless someone can explain to me such technology won’t be immediately fine-tuned and used for other purposes.
Lets stop neglecting our jab.

“Good regulator” is used here to mean that it is good at keeping the output “regular”. That is, reducing the entropy instead of “a regulator which produces good”.
On page 4 the authors acknowledge that there are numerous ways by which one could consider a regulator successful, then go on to say “In this paper we shall use the last measure, H(Z), and we define ‘successful regulation’ as equivalent, to ‘H(Z) is minimal’.”
The fact that reducing entropy doesn’t line up with maximizing utility is true, but the authors never claimed it did. Reducing entropy generalises to a lot of real world problems.
