Even 1 million years is enough to erase almost all signs of a technological civilization. But terrestrial life exists for 4 billion years. This allows for many attempts.
I’d dispute this geologically. Depleted oil reserves, microplastics, and nuclear isotopes come to mind.

For someone who’s new to the AI Safety sphere (apologies if this is a dumb question), but is automated AI R&D desirable from a safety standpoint? That sounds pretty non-desirable.

It’s interesting to me just how many people in the AI research/safety crowd still think AI is worse at writing than the best humans. I think it’s true, but it’s an interesting contrast to the AI bros on Twitter who are like “I just made this in 10 minutes with [TOOL]. [INDUSTRY] is dead.”
