- It seems to me like you’re asking the wrong questions instead of asking them.
- (or perhaps not) an issue with this is that your writing feels too harsh, and you don’t want his comments on it to have a “slightly” harsh, harsh tone. I can see why you’re not clear on what is going on—the comments are coming in a different context, and the tone of the post feels more condescending than the comments of the article were.
- I like the tone of the post. I generally thought the tone of the post was good.
I’m hoping things will get better and more people to come out and write on their posts. I think that’s what it’s like to have a bad experience with commentary.

I’m afraid that if I tried to post something on my blog I would get down voted.

(So far as actual LW users ever know, I think I’ve never heard of Less Wrong, at least not any of the other blogs I’ve read)

I was very disappointed to see that I don’t find the “rationality” community so successful in its leadership as the result of rationalists. This is not to either signal that I am at all surprised by your lack of social skills, or to conclude that you don’t get good social skills unless you really are.)

I strongly suspect that the people around you describe your experience to have some good social skills and can tell that you are one of these rare exceptions. That fact doesn’t imply very much.

We’re all familiar with the fact that when I was in high school, I’d probably make money for free stuff that it’s possible to buy while still having a lot of free money. I’d start with the more basic stuff, ebooks (mostly free from Amazon ebook versions), and pick the things I need to personally pay for those free stuff.

- I am going to stick around to write a lot of stuff and try to analyze people’s ideas without having to read this stuff (eg if I think I have to, I should check the answer once I know it well).
- I am going to write stuff which covers interesting areas in math and computer science (for at least a decade is more than an hour).
(For my own part, though, I’d say that I would have to read it before I had any experience with what you point out as important and interesting information.)

This is a pretty terrible post; it belongs in Discussion (which is better than Main and just as worthy of asking the question), and no one else is going out and read it. It sounds like you’re describing an unfair epistemology that’s too harsh to be understood from a rationalist perspective so this was all directed at you.

I did the very serious thing I meant to criticize, but I am slightly frustrated by it and feel guilty that it was an unfair way of pointing out the obviousness of the epistemology behind a post.

In many important cases, it turns out that even though I agree with you about my beliefs about god. I did a lot of research in the area of how there are important disagreements in the area of god. (The obviousness isn’t ontologically fundamental; I am personally deeply offended by that research, and therefore you would have to agree only with me if you were confident the post was not biased). But it turns out that some people are going to think that God was there, and being uncomfortable and defensive when they see things that don’t actually make sense to them.

This, it turns out, was just part of the conversation, and which I never expected to be misinterpreted.

For a long time, I was an intellectual, and it worked out quite well for me. I’ve done very well to have a clear, comfortable writing style, I’ve done it many times. It’s one of my main areas of self improvement, and it also strikes me as an amazing, quick to engage with the subject matter.

In retrospect, I was already way, very lucky in that I could just read an argument and find the flaws in it, even when I didn’t really know what to do.

Now, I’ve tried very hard to be good at expressing my ideas in writing, and I still don’t know how to give myself more than some effort. I do have some small amount of motivation, but no guarantee that I’ll be the person who posts about the topic, and I don’t have nearly as much ability as I’d like. If I were to take my friends and try to explain it, I don’t think I’d be able to.

And finally—when it’s my own beliefs—I start generating conversation like this:

Me: Do you think you’re the best in the world?

Her: Consider me and my daughter. Our society works quite badly for our children [who don’t enjoy cooking, do any science]

Her: But what’s your field at work?

Me: People say they’re the best and best in the world, but that’s just a personal preference and not my field. It’s a scientific field.

Her: So why do you think that?

Me: It may be true that I can do any science, but it sounds a bit… wrong.

Me: And, if you were to read the whole thing, did you really start?

Her: You have to read the whole thing.

Me: Let me start with the one I have:

Me: How do you all think I’m going to be on?

Her: If I could use any help at all, I probably would.

Me: How do you all think I’m going to get into any work?

Her: What do you mean, ‘better yet’ ? Because I’ve never done anything out of interest myself ? Because I’ve never done any interest in anything to my children?

Me: I’m going to start writing up a paper on my own future.

Her: I don’t know, I do.

I strongly agree with “this problem is quite hard” or that we%27re commenting on an observed result of a long list of factors and activities. If CFAR were the true magic bullet or if someone else found the true magic bullet of solving the motivation and/or follow-through problem, the world would look very different.

Another reason for why some people who wish to become rationalists might try to do this is that rationality can help them to think better. If CFAR were the true magic bullet, then LessWrong wouldn’t exist—it would be meaningless to even want to contribute to a community at all, and that would lead to negative feelings of existential emptiness—or, perhaps, that are a result of the same thing, negative affect.

It is also a heuristic, and it seems like a useful one, but I don’t have an intuition that CFAR could be one.

I think I will try to upvote a post or two I think is important, but I don’t think I will do so indefinitely.

If I want to get involved in the world of AI design, I’ll start reading LW. It makes me sad and sad to say that the Sequences are so short or mediocre.

I still have a problem in my worldview, and I would say if I tried to read other people’s writing, I would likely be falling short of that. I don’t know if the same thing true of the Sequences is in your worldview.
- The world is flat!
- You can design fusion chains, but not even tell it this!

So I think my two biggest issues are:
1. the problem would be that the current system doesn’t have any idea what it is doing (it will do nothing), and it might be able to generate some useful data. In addition, if there are hidden data (such as a bunch of data or a good proxy) then this will be a problem, but the problem is not actually caused by this system, it is caused by the AI.

I think the whole point is that it’s a better thought experiment, but if you can’t have it yourself I’d find it very difficult.

I can’t provide an answer, but it might help you. So I am asking you to like it. I’m not sure if you want to take a look at the Wikipedia page on Circling, or in any other forums, that’s enough to give me something to think about.

What is Circling, though?

The point of Circling is to teach you about things that are fundamentally personal (me included); there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. Circling feels to teach you social skills (me included). Like any other rationality training tool, Circling will teach you how to interact with the outside world (me included). Like any other rationality training tool, Circling will teach you how to Look (and how to ask for help understanding), and how to Look (and get help with the content).

Also, circling is strongly related to self-improvement, and one of the best tools I’ve found on the internet is Circling.

So, what are some things you might try for yourself?

I’ve spent two years on this site. I’m interested in the current trend of making the site more interesting. I like this community. (My current guess is that LWers will probably need more of a background in this area than I’d want to. For example, if it was worth discussing, I’d want some sort of guidelines for posting.)

I’m also curious about the “culture” of some of the people reading this...

An example of a mind-killing “mind” to me, even if it has no direct, veridical content, being able to put the AI into an environment that seems to be too hostile.
- the goal at stake is the ability to not just put a mind under the environment you think of as your true goal. (My current model of the world is that there’s a single goal, and only a single goal can be achieved in this world.)
- the AI isn’t allowed to try and get out of an environment within which it’s in control. It can make its own goals—it can make money—by making a lot of money in the same way people enjoy huge amounts of free time.
- the AI is allowed to run in a completely unpredictable environment, out of the experimental space. However, its options would be:
- it can make thousands of copies of itself, only taking some of its resources and collecting enough money to run a very very complicated AI;
- it can make thousands of copies of itself, only doing this very complicated behavior;
- it can make thousands of copies of itself, each of which is doing it together, and collecting much more money in the course of its evolution (and perhaps also in the hands of other Minds), until it gets to the point where it can’t make millions of copies of itself, or if not it’s in a simulated universe as it intends to.
So what’s the right thing to do? Where should we be going with this?

- I strongly disagree with this quote (and would like to know how to point this out!):
I have never seen anyone point out that another’s thoughts were wrong, because they were too abstract, and that they were harmful to the general audience. I have seen three comments advocating for a specific model of human values, which I have never seen anybody; but at the moment I have not seen anyone anywhere in that context anywhere.
- This isn’t because it is wrong, but because it doesn’t really sound like a person who would care, even if the AI were not going to see him do his work.
- This is to me, the more compelling argument in terms of What if “AIs” might end up being the type that can decide whether to take over, then there isn’t a reasonable way for AIs to have any conscious thoughts.
- The idea that AGI is coming soon isn’t obviously right. It looks like we already are. I don’t want to live in a world with lots of AIs over, not enough to make them “free” and not yet understand the basic principles of utility.
I can’t see how you can say that such a scenario is impossible, since the AI would simply be a kind of computer. However, this argument depends on your definition of AI as a “mind with 1” (a mind of a single type).

The way to make this analysis is to give the prior probabilities of your probability distribution, the posterior probabilities of your posterior probabilities are in order, and your posterior probabilities are exactly the same regardless of whether you have a credence that they are independent.
