A Simple Model of Intelligence: Potential, Realization, and Wisdom

I want to be transparent about how this post was created. The core ideas came from my own observations and thinking after watching a YouTube video about intelligence. I developed this model through a dialogue with Claude (an AI), which helped me structure my thoughts and translate them into English (I’m not a native speaker). The concepts, logic, and direction are mine — the AI served as a thinking partner and translator. I’m sharing this because I genuinely want feedback from people with deeper expertise.

The Core Idea

I’ve been thinking about what intelligence actually means, and I came up with a simple model that seems to explain a lot:

Intelligence = X

Where X is a baseline capacity that combines:

Speed of acquiring information

Ability to retain it

Ability to apply it (which inherently requires understanding)

Wisdom = X × Experience

Where “experience” is not just years lived, but the volume of new information absorbed and integrated.

Why X Must Be Unified

You might ask: why not separate X into different types (mathematical, musical, social)?

Here’s the problem: where do you stop? You could equally say there’s X_vision, X_breathing, X_walking, X_reading… This fragments the model uselessly.

I believe X is a unified baseline characteristic of brain function. If someone is talented in music but weak in math, it’s the same X applied to different domains with different accumulated experience:

Musical ability = X × musical_experience

Mathematical ability = X × mathematical_experience

Emotional intelligence is also just X applied to emotional/​social information rather than numerical data.

Potential vs. Realized X

This is where it gets interesting:

There’s Potential X (determined by physiology at birth) and Realized X (what manifests based on environmental conditions, especially in childhood).

Good conditions (nutrition, stimulation, safety) → X realizes close to potential

Poor conditions (malnutrition, stress, deprivation) → X falls below potential

The brain is most plastic during childhood. After a certain point, damage may be largely irreversible. This means conditions in early life determine how much of your potential you’ll realize.

Experience ≠ Time

Here’s what people often miss: Experience means acquired and integrated information, not just years lived.

Someone can work the same job for 20 years and accumulate little experience, because once a task becomes automatic, it stops generating new information. The brain goes into energy-saving mode.

So in terms of wisdom:

20 years on autopilot ≈ 1 year of learning + 19 years of repetition → low experience value

5 years of continuous learning → high experience value

Quality of experience matters more than duration.

Connection to Existing Research

This model aligns with several concepts:

The Flynn Effect: IQ scores rise ~3 points per decade. In my model: genetic potential X hasn’t changed, but conditions improved → realized X increased.

Fluid vs. Crystallized Intelligence: Fluid intelligence (Gf) ≈ X. Crystallized intelligence (Gc) ≈ Wisdom (X × experience). This explains why Gf declines with age while Gc grows.

Neuroplasticity: Critical periods in childhood determine whether potential X is realized or suppressed — exactly what neuroscience shows.

A Curious Observation

I’ve been thinking about something suspicious: human intelligence seems to be at a critical threshold.

We’re at a level where:

We’re smart enough to understand that X can be increased

But not quite smart enough to actually increase it yet

To raise X to a new level requires either already having that higher X… or accumulating enough knowledge/​experience to compensate. It’s like standing before a locked door, knowing the key is behind it.

Maybe we’re approaching the point where accumulated experience (science, technology) will let us create tools (AI, genetic engineering, neural interfaces) to finally break through.

What I’m Asking

I’m not claiming this is correct or complete. I want to know:

Where does this model break down logically?

What existing research contradicts or refines this?

What direction should I explore further?

I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who study cognition, neuroscience, or have thought deeply about intelligence. I’m here to learn and understand where my thinking is wrong or incomplete.
