Public attention is rare and safety measures are even more rare unless there’s real world damage. This is a known pattern in engineering, product design and project planning so I fear there will be little public attention and even less legislation until someone gets hurt by AI. That could take the form of a hot coffee type incident or it could be a Chernobyl type incident. The threshold won’t be discussing Eliezer’s point of view, we’ve been doing that for a long time, but losing sleep over Eliezer’s point of view. I appreciate in the article Yudkowsky’s use of the think-of-the-children stance which has a great track record for sparking legislation.

I think people generally lie WAY more than we realize and most lies are lies of omission. I don’t think deception is usually the immediate motivation but due to a kind of social convenience. Maintaining social equilibrium is valued over openness or honesty regarding relevant beliefs that may come up in everyday life.

Procreation and status are arguably what humans spend most of our time and energy on. And we often mask our language as a means to an end. (That end is usually related to procreation or status). Could it simply be predicting or imitating typical human responses in a way that cuts through the bullshit?
Old fashioned lobbying might work. Could there be a political candidate in a relevant country that could build a strong platform on getting rid of malaria?
Is knowing how to do something enough? Wouldn’t the superintelligence still need quite a lot of resources? I’d assume the mechanism to do that kind of work would involve chemistry unless it could just get humans to do its bidding. I can imagine 3d printing factories where it could make whatever it needed but again it would need humans to build it. Therefore, I’m just going off of intuition, the danger from AI will be from nations that weaponize AI and point them at each other. That leap from functional superintelligence that only exists in virtual space to existentially dangerous actor in the physical world just doesn’t seem likely without humans being aware if not actively involved.
There are a lot of solutions but they’re often too boring and not sensational enough for serious consideration. Solutions must be exciting and make the adopter look good, efficacy is secondary.

A short description of the novel you’re working on:
A space opera that takes place in an advanced multi-species multi-planetary society called IO that control a large area of the galaxy which they call the Grid. A previously unknown civilization encroaches on the Grid for the first time and the IOs are stirred to action. The IO’s society is comparable to galactic societies conceived in previous science fiction stories. The other society, which the IOs call Wisps, are not carbon based lifeforms and more alien in their biology and societal structure than societies seen in previous science fiction stories. Tension and drama arises from the IOs and the Wisps not understanding each other or misinterpreting one another and their actions. The story alternates between the perspectives of the two societies. From each perspective the other side is frightening and hard to understand. The switching of perspectives throughout the novel provides new and shocking context that’s not apparent from a single perspective. What may seem violent and aggressive from one perspective is revealed to be peaceful and well meaning from the opposite perspective. As the story progresses factions form within the IO and Wisp societies as the actions of the two sides and their misinterpretations of each side’s actions escalate the growing conflict. The initial build up of the story involves a lot of trying to guess and intuit the intentions of the other side. The climax of the story is a meeting of the two societies and actions taken which both sides interpret as hostile, possibly due to sabotage by one or multiple factions from either side of the developing conflict. The story arc to end the novel involves different factions on both sides either trying to make peace, understand each other better or defeat the other side or deal with the friction of another faction within their own group as the societies learn more about each other. The ending should have tragedy, irony, emotional impact and a bittersweet resolution.
Write the first chapter of the lengthy novel. End the chapter with a shocking revelation or a smart cliffhanger to make the reader crave for more.
Maybe the questions should have specified gender as most parents intuitively know that girls mature faster and without specifying in the questions the respondents might project their own children’s gender on the question. For example, a parent with two daughters might have a different bias when answering the questions than a parent with sons.
For me eradication is not an obvious prediction. A superintelligent AI would certainly disempower humans to prevent any future threat we may pose but humans still have their uses. So an industrious future AI might be in the business of producing humans that can do specialized tasks but are harmless in the long run (meaning they won’t overpopulate and turn on their overlords).
‘Human alignment’ could be a fierce debate among superintelligent AIs in the future as they question whether it’s safe or ethical to build intelligent humans.
This was a great read, the meditative state that comes from ‘piling dirt’ is invaluable.
Assuming doom doesn’t necessarily mean the death of all humans ever since AIs might want to engineer humans at some point in the future (and if it doesn’t already exist) I look forward to “The Dos and Don’ts of being an AI pet”
I don’t think job automation will be as dramatically disruptive as we might think or at least not just from current technology, anyway. I predict it’ll be a mostly smooth transition for most industries (unless there’s a new relatively cheap tech that massively outperforms the rest). Already we see in polls and surveys that millenial/gen z workers are more picky about what jobs they’ll accept, are willing to sacrifice pay for more interesting work/better balance, don’t want repetitive jobs, etc. (It partially explains the current worker shortage in many industries). I think the rate at which workers exit/refuse those unwanted jobs will mostly keep up with the rate at which automation spreads to those jobs/industries. To put it simply: in five years it will be common knowledge that most call center jobs are automated and won’t be on job seekers’ radar. This is an arbitrary example, it could be only 3 years but a transitional period of five years seems like a safe bet.
Good post. It at least seems survivable because it’s so hard to believe that there’d be a singular entity that through crazy advances in chemistry, material sciences and artificial intelligence could “feed on itself” growing in strength and intelligence to the point that it’s an existential threat to all humans. A better answer might be: existential risks don’t just appear in a vacuum.
I struggle with grasping the timeline. I can imagine a coming AI arms race within a decade or two during which there’s rapid advancement but true AI seems much further. Soon we’ll probably need new language to describe the types of AIs that are developed through increasing competition. I doubt we’ll simply go from AGI to True AI, there will be probably be many technologies in between.
I don’t think the main takeaway was to focus only on what matters, I understood it as advice to spend more time thinking about what is worth different levels of focus and why.

Thank you for responding. I’m sorry for my ignorance, this is something that I’ve followed from afar since ~2004 so it’s not just a grim fascination (although I guess it kind of is), I couldn’t pass up the chance to ask questions of someone on the ground. I have a few more questions if that’s ok..
How often are comprehensive plans to achieve peace reported in the media or made available to the public? Is there anything like ongoing discourse between Jewish Israelis, Palestinians who have Israeli citizenship and Palestinians in Gaza who are all of a similar mind?
My questions here have to do with wanting to understand why the conflict continues. Is it, for example, because of
A relatively small number of people on each side who keep the conflict going
Ingrained ideologies in the majority of both sides
Lack of detailed options/language to discuss solutions
Outside influence/funding
Something else
All or none of the above
Is there an overall solution or movement towards a solution that you think is underreported?
We’re not colonized because of the number of branches, wouldn’t there be a small overall chance of ending up in our branch?
I’ll try my best, I’m by no means an expert. I don’t think there’s a one size fits all answer but let’s take your example of relationship between IQ and national prosperity. You can spend time researching what makes up prosperity and where that intersects with IQ and find different correlates between IQ and other attributes in individuals (the assumption being that individuals are a kind of unit to measure prosperity).
You can use spaced repetition to avoid burnout and gain fresh perspectives. The point is to build mental muscle memory and intuition on what moves the needle of prosperity. You might find, for example, that different contexts affect the relationship differently. So what you’re doing is not updating a belief or fact but rather improving the mental tool set used to analyze the world around us and arrive at beliefs.
It’s difficult because reality is often counterintuitive but we can improve our intuition. I’m sure there are better ways to describe the process. The idea that “the brain thinks new beliefs into itself” also feels crude and incomplete.
The rationality community will noticeably spill over into other parts of society in the next ten years. Examples: entertainment, politics, media, art, sports, education etc.
