Seems likely there will be at least one terrorist attack [= peacetime attack on civilians] using drones soon. Perhaps something like this old Future of Life video.
How will this impact the broader AI safety discourse? Is the AI safety community ready to (re)act on this moment?
Ukraine does use AI in their drones, mainly it looks like the mechanism is human pilots drone nearby to the enemy position using an optical connection, selects targets with help from computer vision camo-detection systems, then the optical connection may disconnect and the drone uses more computer vision and probably some simple control algorithm to autonymously flies to the selected targets and explode.

???
Terrorist attacks using drones have been a thing for a while now e.g. Caracas 2018, Abha 2019, Homs 2023.
Good point. Maybe I should have said—“in the West”.
Developed country or rich country would be clearer, bc Caracas is western hemisphere and Japan should count
I don’t understand how human-piloted drones (the ones in use today, and almost certainly for early terrorist use) have anything to do with AI.
