I actually liked the didactic parts—generally speaking, I read sf for the infodumps. When I want character or prose style I go for actual literature.
I sometimes have a hard time enjoying literature. But on the other hand, bad writing really bothers me. So I prefer to look for interesting ideas, well crafted. (e.g. Iain (M.) Banks, Kazuo Ishiguro, Ursula LeGuin).
