I could not give less of a shit about the Molotov cocktail. The overhanded attempt by Sam Altman & co to turn it into a “see what happens when write journalism about powerful people” lesson is way more disgusting than the actual “attack”.
If you are AI-pause adjacent I humbly suggest that you either:
Ignore it, because it’s almost completely irrelevant to AI policy & governance except inasmuch as bad actors can use it to manipulate others opinions about AI policy & governance
Say “yeah I don’t need to ‘disavow’, everyone of substance in this movement is against violence, the histrionics are a naked attempt to manipulate public opinion in response to the acts of an insane person who wasn’t even able to hurt anybody.”
Obviously if you are in a position to “clean house” or otherwise ban people who are naming themselves dumb shit inside discord servers, you should absolutely do so; violence really is destructive to the commons and dramatically counterproductive. The public hand ringing from rationalists is giving up way too much for my taste. People on Twitter don’t care about “stochastic terrorism”, they just want to shut you up.
With all of the disagree votes, I felt like I should actually give my reasons:
I think actual violence is worse than saying dumb things.
Saying that you don’t support violence against your political enemies is a good thing to do.
I agree that AI pause people have nothing to apologize for here, but taking the chance to reenforce norms against violence is better than ignoring it. Like how it’s not Obama’s fault that someone killed Charlie Kirk, but his response to it was good anyway.
