I often see people say that knowledge of the HuggingFace hack is extremely low among the general US population, say 3%. Have there been polling/surveys on this question, to anyone’s knowledge?
Cheap billboards on random low-demand highways run at like half a cent per impression or less, is my sense. Which would mean buying one impression per person in the US would be about $2m. If someone were to stand up an attempt to buy cheap billboards telling people to google the HuggingFace hack and call their congresspeople encouraging them to shut down AI development, I would definitely donate.
I think you should ask the people who say it’s low, how they know and what specifically they mean. Find out if they’re talking “awareness” or “understanding”—what’s the threshold for “knowledge of...”?
My impression is that many are aware of it—anyone who follows tech even a little bit heard about it, anyone close to coding or AI saw some details. My mother asked me about it. And there’s a pretty steep curve for who understands how much of it. 3% of gen pop understanding any LW topic would be asking a lot.
