From my perpsective, the biggest point of the political work is to buy time to do the technical work.
(And yeah there’s a lot of disagreement about what sort of technical work needs doing and what counts as progress, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t work to do, it just means it’s confusing and difficult)
I too struggle to understand what, if any, technical progress was made on the alignment problem.
LW discourse on alignment reminds me of the Buddha master on the mountaintop describing God: “not this, not that, not that either, and certainly not that.” I saw many more posts about what the answer is not than what the answer is.
Knowing that you haven’t solved the problem is actually really quite useful and important! I think basically no progress has been made on the alignment problem, but I do think the arguments for why it’s not been solved yet are as such really quite important for helping humanity navigate the coming decades.
I don’t see what technical work there is to do at this point. It seems like it’s all political
