This still leaves the question of whether different people get different selections or the same open. How often does the process randomly selects a new set of posts?
Given the recent discussion about long-running discussions it might be worthwhile to add the date of the last reply to the weighting. That way older posts that get a reply would rise to the top of the site recommendations and it would be more likely that users would interact with those posts.
