While I also really like this post, I am confused by your reasoning. You want to have it as a reference because “Each of the ideas here is something anyone doing ‘rationalist discourse’ should be familiar with as a modality, and shift into at least sometimes”. I would like to know what you mean, because to me it sounds like having it as a reference to use when you think the other side in a debate should obey the standards, whereas you do not want to be restricted by the same set of norms. Would you like to elaborate?
Duncan goes out of his way to say “this post is guidelines, not rules.” I go a bit further, saying “people should at least be capable of going into the modes listed here” which is not meant to say anything at all (yet) about which sorts of situations make this relevant.
I might want to use this, as a moderator, when I notice an argument going badly on LW (between two people who are not me), and saying “hey guys, I think this might go better if Alice and/or Bob were trying to do [guideline X]”, without that being a definitive statement about “On LW you should being doing X most of the time.”

Woah, not what I meant at all.
