The human brain project is largely not study, its a huge pointless database and ‘simulation’ (without knowing what you are simulating) project for its own sake. Which is why so many scientists hate it, for its pointlessness and taking research money that could actually be productive rather than buzzword salad elsewhere.
I agree. My reason for posting the link here is as reality check—LW seems to be full of people firmly convinced that brain-uploading is the only only viable path to preserving consciousness, as if the implementation “details” were an almost-solved problem.
The human brain project exists because “we want to simulate the human brain” is a project that can be sold to politicians. A lot of more sensible projects such as having money for replication of already existing research isn’t as easily sold.

Ah, no. I do agree that uploading is probably the best path, but B doesn’t follow from A.
