I’d like to question the premise that the public hates AI. I think people have split preferences on it—they don’t want the world to end and also welcome some of the benefits of easier access to knowledge. I think there is a reason why AI apps have been at the top of the appstore charts for years now

Yeah I think you are right, e/acc seems like a very simple meme and seems to present a strawman of the safety community. Though it may be similar to EA as some of the most important people in the EA community don’t refer to themselves as EA
@habryka I agree that Bernie Sanders and others have conflated policies to prevent catastrophic risk with those that prevent environmental catastrophe, though perhaps they are not so different?
@HoldenKarnofsky I wonder if future RSP should take environmental risks into deeper consideration? This has become particularly relevant since the Anthropic/Musk data center partnership that was announced last month. X is being sued for polluting a poor neighborhood in Memphis with portable generators flouting clean air regulations (https://earthjustice.org/press/2026/naacp-asks-court-for-emergency-action-to-stop-illegal-air-pollution-from-xais-data-center-power-plant). Anthropic is scaling using this infrastructure and further enriching one of the least responsible actors in AI today (Elon Musk). On the whole i feel like Anthropic is fairly responsible actor though this decision seemed a bit out of character. (full disclosure: i’m considering an offer at Anthropic right now and this is a real concern in my decision)
