  Great article. This comes at the right time since I recently started working on cause prioritization.

  There were just a few things that made the article unclear:

  • I had to reread the equations section multiple times because I couldn’t see the difference between C(x) and C(X). Could you use different symbols for cost-effectiveness of intervention vs cost-effectiveness of area?

  • In the implications section, you mention “cause effectiveness”. Is this the same as cost-effectiveness?

  • In footnote [2] you wrote “life-with-like” instead of “like-with-like”

  Hey Vika, props for writing this. Putting myself in the open state seems to be my personal fully general argument for doing things I’ve been putting off (e.g. aversive phone calls). I like to think of myself as being open to new experiences, so once I can frame the decision to do the aversive thing as deciding between being open or being closed, well, of course I’ve got to be open :)

  Thanks for mentioning GRG and the Buck institute.

  1) I visited the Buck institute at their recent open house and found out that they have an annual budget that is 10x SENS’s, and both institutions seem to have the same goal. Any idea why SENS is more talked about round these parts?

  2) The person who runs the GRG mailing list, Johnny, is really friendly and linked me to many more longevity related events (e.g. Bay Area Aging Symposium, Health Extension meetups) and newsletters (e.g. The Longevity Reporter and Fight Aging!)

  Cool article. It’s related to, but not identical to our product. That paper uses β-lactamase activity as a proxy for antibacterial resistance. Ours, on the other hand, works for pretty much any bacterium; using a fluorescence microscope we count how many bacteria are left alive when exposed to an antibacterial. If there are a lot left alive, then they’re probably resistant.

  Hey, thanks a lot for your comments and for your encouragement! :)

  Have you or anyone you know gone through this process before?

  I ask because I’m a programmer (my friend is the cell biologist) and so what I’m familiar with is making a quick MVP to show to a party responsible for doing the purchasing.

  To answer your questions: the research is all done and we can make a demo of the diagnostic in a long weekend; our results so far are not on patients, just culture lines; and there’s no need to do comparative trials since antibiotic tests in use in hospitals all require culturing which takes far longer than our method.
