Writing more words about a concept isn’t necessarily an increase in the quantity of writing. The purpose of increasing quantity is to increase the number of attempts, to allow more opportunities for feedback. It may be better to increase the quantity of ideas the student must attempt to communicate. To elaborate on the same idea would still be expanding on a single attempt, rather than creating more attempts at the same idea. Some methods of increasing the quantity of attempts could be either assigning questions with higher complexity (involving more parts), or more frequent, shorter writing assignments. Also, using a grading system that de-emphasizes the weight of any individual attempt, maybe through sheer quantity or ignoring the lowest X% of a student’s scores, would decrease fear of failure.
