Nanotechnology will rather obviously wipe out existing protein-DNA organisms—by replacing them with something much better.
However, ending life or civilization doesn’t look at all likely. It wouldn’t be permitted by those in charge. The whole “oops-apocalypse” scenario seems implausible to me—our descendants simply won’t be so stupid and incompetent as to fumble on that scale.
