When I look back and think “what did we get wrong that we realistically could have done better?” I think the thing is having a clearer model that negotiations would calcify and people would get exhausted, and also that people wouldn’t primarily be “applying agency and rationality” the whole way through, they would be settling into patterns, and choosing “the amount of relaxed/paranoid to be” rather than choosing “the right actions based on their goals and values.” It’s easier to dial-up and dial-down paranoia, than it is to change complex strategy. And we weren’t factoring that in, but when I’m judging our rationality, that’s what I think we could have credibly figured out in advance.
