If you are consistently surprised by people not meeting your expectations, you are doing something wrong—just update far enough until you expect to be surprised in the other direction just as often.
If you get closer to doing that, it might hurt less (for me, it really helped). It’ll just be a background fact, and you can then engage with people for their other benefits.
Sure, the world is broken, people are crazy, you can do better without even trying, etc. But shouldn’t you have already known that?
