My guess is that it’s interesting that the gaming community landed on “marinate” as the word. If it’s close enough to deception in semantic space for humans, then it’s likely that way for LLMs too.
I find it somewhat unlikely that the models used that word specifically because of Among Us terminology, though. One glaring discrepancy is that the actual word gamers use is “marinate” (verb) not “marinade” (noun).
