This is trying to carry a metaphor too far. I don’t find any value in this “grayspace” concept whatsoever. It’s strained and has no applicability to reality outside of your particular dojo.
What? Really? My immediate connection was thinking about grad school for academia/research positions, or school-school for the work-a-day life. Other instances off the top of my head:
Religious conversions (eg in Judaism you need to study for a while before being converted)
Internships
Levels of sports (eg high school → college → professional)
Dating → intimacy → co-living → marriage & children
Mentorships → working
Social networks → companies or start-ups
“No applicability” is in general a very strong claim which, if I were you, I would think seriously about before leveling at an idea. You may say you don’t think its all that useful compared to alternatives, but that is very different from saying it has “no applicability to reality outside of your particular dojo”.
Datapoint: I run regular tabletop RPG oneshots. We’ll play new characters with whoever shows up, running through the adventure in one evening. I also run long running tabletop RPG campaigns with more regular players, which I often select players for by picking players I like a lot and who mesh well at the oneshots.
The oneshots map pretty well to the gray space concept.
In the future, you may look back and say “ah, so this is what it feels like, from the inside, to have a blindspot/be caught in the typical mind fallacy.” Don’t confuse “I don’t understand the applicability” with “therefore there literally isn’t any.”
