if i had to pinpoint what I think is the biggest issue with the rationality and ea community, i’d say that ea thinks wisdom is compassion, and rationality thinks wisdom is intelligence
but in fact, wisdom is a secret third thing which should steer intelligence and compassion
I don’t think either EAs or rationalists think about or in terms of wisdom at all.
EA is not philosophically unified enough to have an answer to the question “what is wisdom”, and rationalists (at their best) would just respond with “Of what decision relevance is this ‘wisdom’ thing you talk about?” or “Standard definitions seem to conflate wisdom with several things which seem relatively distinct eg knowing what you want, knowing about the world, and knowing how to achieve what you want”.
That’s my point, they think the idea of wisdom is confused and you can replace it with the idea of intelligence or compassion. That there’s not a real ‘there’ there that gives you true discernment and ability to tell what is good, right, called for.
yes exactly? they think true discernement and the ability to tell what is good right and called for, is a matter of intelligence. thus they think wisdom is intelligence.
I think it is, but compassion is described in a utilitarian way. I’m perhaps using compassion in an unorthodox definition, but actually the way people tend to use it: How do I use intelligence to do good.
Intelligence is building up, holding on, abstracting. Wisdom is letting go, unwinding, seeing what is. Compassion is the process of trying to build up in order that you or others can let go
ok, i think you’re pointing to a different structure than the one i usually mean to point at with the word intelligence, though also a real thing.
wisdom definition gives me a bit of a hint at what you’re trying to say. kinda the core move of focusing, or the thing I discussed with Unreal? this does seem important and neat! though maybe a little too central in the MA sphere? i have some guesses about why that’d end up as central, and some eehhh feels about that as a core meme.
anyway, most people here could benefit from some samples of this, i think. but initial post seems almost anti optimized to get that to be useful for the audience here.
suggest seeing what is, including the audience you’ll find here :) <playfully trolling>

That was not in fact your original point. Before you said,
yes exactly? they think true discernement and the ability to tell what is good right and called for, is a matter of intelligence. thus they think wisdom is intelligence.
EA is not well-described as thinking wisdom is compassion. That could be said of many charitable movements, and is less true of EA than typically.

plz define wisdom
or unpack it more at least, if defining is hard
