I don’t get what the intent of this post is. You had a very elite kind of self-actualization (working at a climate change startup in Oxford), you gave it up and got a grant to be an effective altruist, you were disconcerted by how much money was being thrown around in this new environment, but got used to it, and...?
It does come across as trying to make a point, especially since you ended on the anecdote about the book lending system being indicative of wealth and not necessarily high trust.
Most reasonable folks would at least draw the conclusion that you were trying to express disappointment that the culture wasn’t as high trust as you had imagined, that there are organizational inefficiencies, etc.
