And then I noted that even in the second case, I am cynical enough to believe too many people will choose a self destructive form of hedonism (no I don’t believe all hedonism is bad).
I’m not saying force anything on anyone. I am saying giving people a brief period of above the starting point followed by a long period of below the starting point is not an improvement. So I would not opt to do it. And I don’t see any outcome other than that as possible, given the question framing as an increase in material wealth absent any change in capabilities,
