I agree that we already have the makings of removing humans from the battlefield. Fighters, bombers, drones, all can be controlled remotely (especially once the starlink-like constellations are up) or semi-autonomously. General Dynamics-like robots can certainly be deployed as a substitute for boots on the ground, not too far down the road. And, given the unexpected advances in AI through GPT text/image generators, this tech becomes uncomfortably close to the Terminator-like scenarios.
Funnily enough, the terminator scenario (in which an AI repurposes existing military tech to fight humans) didn’t even occur to me. Instead I had been thinking about a scenario where some human+AI faction (either humans with an AI servant, or humans with an AI leader) gets access to this technology before the rest of the world does. I do think this is substantially more likely than the terminator scenario, but maybe I should revisit that view.
Drones, yes, Terminators less so. It depends on whether AI technology can thread the needle of being powerful enough to navigate a very complex environment but not general enough to be a superintelligence. I kinda doubt that such a gap even exists.
