Hmm, I would very weakly predict ASL clocking out a little above speech in speed. If it ends up close I’d see that as evidence that the speed of communication is bottlenecked by a cognitive limit. Consider that reading speed seems possibly bottlenecked (at least in speed readers) by eye-saccade speed (though probably for most people the cognitive constraint is more taut) and that gets up to like 500 WPM.
