Narrow interests will always beat broad interests in a democracy, so keep paying up
This seems to be a side effect of guaranteeing that minority voices will always be heard. Otherwise it’s easy to imagine a situation arising where the proverbial two wolves and one sheep ‘democratically’ decide on what to have for dinner.
I have so far not seen any proposals, or even, theoretic arguments, for how this core problem of democracy can be sidestepped.
In fact Plato is still commonly referenced for his argument of democracy inevitably degenerating into tyranny due to these dynamics, for want of more sophisticated arguments.

Countries with proportional representation where party discipline for voting in parliament is a key part of the cultural culture behave differently than the US.
If a German parliamentarian wants to protect companies in his district he has fewer tools to do so than an American parliamentarian.
