Everyone who is talking about whether it is desirable to consider the feelings of your interlocutors, and what to do about those feelings, etc.—on all sides of the discussion—would do well to read carefully the comments section of this old Yvain post. Pay special attention to the comments by Vladimir_M.
That is a good comment thread and makes me wish we had better technology for synthesizing things from comment threads into top-level posts. I would upvote a post that just copied the best quotes from that thread into a top-level post.
