And how does it even work as a theory of free will? You are not going to get anything like libertarian free will out of deterministic algorithms.

Free from what? wouldn’t that just be will? And why do preferences and reasoning have to be an algorithm?
But this resolution leaves me not entirely satisfied because it means free will is binary—you either have it (you are a sufficiently complex algorithm that models counterfactuals) or you don’t (you are a rock).
I cant see why the ability to model counterfactuals can’t come in degrees. I also don’t see why it’s a form of free will. It’s certainly a form decision making ,but free will doesn’t mean any kind of decision making.
I did not willingly build, or be conscious enough to choose what to work on or how I respond to a situation. Same brain, same algorithm, different sense of freedom, and this is not captured by “you are the algorithm”.
Yes, levels of conscious control can vary. Conscious control is one of the cluster of things “free will” can mean—the others include freedom from compulsion , or compatibilist free will, and freedom from external determination , or libertarian free will.
