I suspect the real reason why a lot of people around here like consequentialism, is that (despite their claims to the contrary) alieve that ideas should have a Platonic mathematical backing, and the VNM theorem provides just such a backing for consequentialism.

(I don’t have to like consequentialism to be motivated by considerations it offers, such as relative unimportance of what I happen to like.)
I don’t see any link between Platonism and consequentialism.
Basically, the VNM theorem is sufficiently elegant that it causes people to treat consequentialism as the Platonic form of morality.
