[math, art, …] This, in turn, requires boring stretches during which you ignore a mind pleading with you to seek novel stimuli
Meh? I like math, and so it’s not boring. I take out my phone when in line or in the bathroom. The best way to not do so would be if I had some math to think about. Sometimes what I’m doing on my phone is using the drawing app to do math.
I don’t see why deep focus involves boredom boredom. I especially don’t see why focus generally would be improved by waiting in line doing nothing. If you are tolerant of thinking about nothing while in line, then wouldn’t you find it easier to tune out of, say, a boring lecture you don’t care about?
I am quite skeptical of “attentional training”. Generally I am skeptical of far transfer effects, having seen endless claims of e.g. piano lessons improving math ability dissappear when you get better studies. Furthermore there’s some (though I think it may have been overturned or weakened?) studies on ego depletion, suggesting a short term reversal; and people often report feelings of “burnout”, suggesting a long term reversal too.
