The Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year, ushering in a time of cold and dark. It used to be a death sentence to many. But through the power of science and community, it became little more than an inconvenience. In this way, it metaphorically represents the other kinds of darkness and challenges in the world—past, present, and future—and our responsibility to rise and meet them.
We will begin with a vegan potluck dinner, followed by a 90-minute program of music and prose about the history of humanity, science, existential risk, and community. It will bring you out the other side hopeful and resolute in the face of the darkness of the world, particularly because we are facing it together.
The event itself is free, and we will have free vegan hot cocoa available. Please bring vegan food (no drinks), potluck-style! Vegan means no animal products whatsoever; no meat, gelatin, dairy, eggs, honey, etc. There will be other drinks from a full service barista and coffee bar available for purchase.
Well-behaved children are all welcome to attend, but please be mindful of any noise they start to make.
We are holding this at the ‘Arts on Broadway’ event space, located inside Post Coffee company.
Hello folks! Thank you for RSVPing on LessWrong! Our primary event page is on Partiful, and it looks like we will have a full house tonight (~75 people).
I look forward to having you all!
Reminder that we are doing a vegan potluck beforehand. Don’t let that stop your from attending, but bringing something to share helps this free event be all that it can be. If you bring something, please make sure it is vegan (no meat, dairy, eggs, gelatin, honey, etc), and bring an appropriately sized/shaped serving utensil.
I recommend showing up no later than 5:15-5:30 so we all have time to settle into our chairs and eat at least one course of food before the program starts.
