After reading the ‘is it the humidity’ post, I immediately thought: That seems like a fast, cheap, and risk-free intervention. Just buy a humidifier on Amazon. Reading some reviews. Turns out they all need filters and maintenance. Looking for ones that are more automated or something. Can’t find ones that don’t require cleaning or filter exchange. On which forum would I find advice on which devices to use? Googleing Cystic Fibrosis. Reading the CF Subreddit. Reading some more on humidifiers. It seems that it is challenging to prevent bacterial buildup, even in a clinical setup. See An in-hospital evaluation of the sonic mist ultrasonic room humidifier. I don’t think this is working for me. I don’t think I will clean it regularly enough and have higher risks than gains. Instead, I will probably turn down the heating even more in winter than I’m already doing.
In case you are interested in these devices, one of the better ones I saw seems to be this one from Wick (also mentioned on the Cystic Fibrosis forum). Note that the product text points out the effect of humidity on flu viruses.
I use one of these, the Turmix AX 200. It’s exactly what it looks like, a tub of water with a heating element. I get limescale building up, but no algae. Personally, I wouldn’t use an ultrasonic one, because I don’t care to have ultrasonics blasting in my ears, even if I supposedly can’t “hear” them. Loud ultrasonics can damage your hearing even if you can’t hear the ultrasonics themselves, and I’ve no way of measuring how loud they are.
