I don’t think including the word “inevitably” in (1) is reasonably balanced with the other two. Just by this inclusion, it rules out people who think that it probablywill regress or has a significant risk of regress. Meanwhile (3) explicitly uses “may” which just means “not impossible”.
Not that I have a horse in this race since I think they’re all wrong or irrelevant as stated. (1) wrong because it’s obviously not inevitable, (2) wrong because oil companies obviously do care about EROI, and (3) irrelevant because of course that may happen but so may many other things (including regress to pre-industrial society or accelerating to the stars).
I selected those three camps not because they’re the only viewpoints out there, but simply the most dramatic/popular I’ve seen in my time engaging with this issue. (1) And (3) are somewhat mutually exclusive. I included (1) not because I’m arguing it’s inevitable but merely because it seems to dominate the popular discourse on this subject.
