This was what happens in earthly fiction with stupid characters; not with smart people who aspire to be dath ilani.
It seems pretty unreasonable to expect people to “aspire to be dath ilani” because they’re part of or even central to, the LessWrong or rationality community.
dath ilan is one particular, interesting, projection of what a saner world might look like, from a guy who inspired a lot of us. But is by no means the normative consensus! There are lots of details of dath ilan that I disagree with, in the sense that I claim they’re unrealistic, unworkable, unfair, or just wrong.
I’m definitely inspired by lots of the ideas put forward in Planecrash. It’s influenced both my ethics and my epistemology. Its one of the books that has most influenced me.
But it seems crazy for people to assume that I’m holding myself to the standards of this fictional world, when I haven’t declared that I’m trying to do that.
