It’s something I used to occasionally notice in myself, and have seen a few times in others’ playing. I think what’s going on is that you can approach subtle timing changes (single-note anticipation, playing ahead/behind the beat) by either thinking of time as changing or thinking of timing as changing. And, at least in the kinds of music I play, you really want the latter!
