The post has a lot of things going on. I am chipping on a it somewhat one spoonful at a time.
I didn’t engage with the main drama directly as I am not around there.
It feels like a story about the a stag hunting party that encountered a bear. A bit meatier but a different beast and dangerous. Then some hunters go “nope, I didn’t sign up for this” or just flee in abject horror. Those that stay get mauled because a small group can’t deal with a full bear.
With a regular stag hunt it elicts frustration. Repeated failures might make starvation creep closer but usually dominate doing nothing. Getting mauled by a bear is actively harmful. And it is more harmful the less people are there to share the hurt. With a group you can carry wounded, or have diluted chance of getting hit by the next swing. Each additional desserter means the ones that stay get actively hurt more.
Maybe the hunting group didn’t prepare to actually defend from the prey. Maybe they could have won if everybody suppressed their horror and just followed standard pack hunting guides. Somebody on serious mode gets super annoyed when they thought they went in with a group and end up dueling a bear. And there can be a sense of “hunting is exactly what hunting packs do”, “we train up on smaller prey so that we can go after larger ones”. Then there is the issue if instead of the village going out to look for the bear the bear visits the village.
