I have seen two separate people from two different social circles of mine say that they think OpenAI and then Anthropic announcing security incidents is a publicity stunt to attract shareholder attention by using the “killer god-computer” trope to signal just how advanced their technology has become. This seems like an obvious conspiracy theory to me, but the fact that it is coming from two unrelated people who claim that they didn’t read it anywhere else gives me pause. Has anyone else seen this? Did it come from somewhere?
I have definitely seen this online, and it also smells like a conspiracy theory to me. I can’t tell you where it ultimately came from, just that certain influential people are parroting it, like the CEO of Mistral.

It feels like it’s the standard pattern of calling everything security related that the companies do as being publicity stunts.
If you believe that Anthropic hold back Fable for their stated cybersecurity reasons as a publicity stunt, this is just more of the same reasoning.
