All of this needs to be fact checked, so might be better as it’s own article, but I had wondered if the creation of the machine had played a role in enabling the social rights movement to free slaves who were previously depended on for the job, but looking into it, it seems to be the opposite. The social rights movement to free slaves provided incentive to automate work they had previously been relied on for. Interestingly, it doesn’t seem like a greater share of wealth was distributed from capital holders to slaves, nor did the price of cotton increase to provide fair payment to slaves. Instead, it seems slaves were moved out of the industry and replaced with machines who could do the work just as cheaply but without moral patient-hood that had made use of slaves immoral.
