The social rights movement to free slaves provided incentive to automate work they had previously been relied on for. Interestingly, it doesn’t seem like a greater share of wealth was distributed from capital holders to slaves, nor did the price of cotton increase to provide fair payment to slaves. Instead, it seems slaves were moved out of the industry and replaced with machines who could do the work just as cheaply but without moral patient-hood that had made use of slaves immoral.
