Report says that democracies (including non-Western ones) are increasingly united behind America and opposed to Russia and China, in terms of public opinion. The non-democratic world’s views on Russia and China are still positive, similar to those countries’ attitudes towards the United States. Positive views of China are highly correlated with the Belt and Road Initiative.
It says, in the liberal democracies, 75% negative about China, 87% negative about Russia; in the rest of the world, 70% positive about China, 66% positive about Russia.
But please note: the nations grouped under “rest of the world” are five times more populous: liberal democracies encompass 1.2 billion, rest of the world encompasses 6.3 billion.
Maybe the most significant harbinger, regarding rest of the world, is that while it hasn’t turned against Russia and China, it also hasn’t turned against the United States. Judging by figure 7a, the USA retains enough worldwide popularity to still be slightly ahead of China and Russia overall.
On page 9, we’re told that there are 2.5 billion in societies clearly aligned with the USA, 2.3 billion in societies clearly aligned with Russia and China, and 1.4 billion in India, “an ambiguous case”. That leaves another 1.2 billion ambiguous, for a total of 2.6 billion nonaligned.
That leads to a remarkably balanced threefold division of the world into west, east, and nonaligned.
We’re also told that although they have the same populations, the west bloc has twice the economic power of the east bloc, and it’s also more widely distributed among member nations. West bloc has $70 trillion, just $21 trillion in USA; east bloc has $35 trillion, with $30 trillion in Russia and China.
The study only looks at opinions of east and west. They don’t think of the nonaligned as a bloc in itself, and so don’t tell us how much it’s worth economically. But they say (page 9, footnote 6) they’re using PPP adjusted GDP.
Wikipedia says 2022 GWP (PPP adjusted) is $160 trillion. That would leave $55 trillion for the nonaligned bloc, of which India has $11 trillion. Though I don’t know how consistent the Cambridge figures are with the Wikipedia figures.
Here is the actual study (assembled at Cambridge).
