I realized today that UDT doesn’t really need the assumption that other players use UDT. In any multiplayer game with imperfect recall where all players have the same utility function, “everyone using UDT” is a Nash equilibrium that gives everyone their highest possible expected utility. So you can just use it unilaterally.
Not sure if I’m misunderstanding, but wouldn’t it be more accurate to say that you’re justified in assuming the other players use UDT, not that you don’t have to assume it?
If the other players aren’t using UDT, it’s not necessarily your best option, right? (E.g. in Psy-Kosh’s problem, if the other players have all decided to say “yea” for some reason, you don’t want to unilaterally say “nay.”)

Yeah, “justified in assuming” sounds right. Though I’m very unsure about this idea, it keeps flip-flopping for me.
