Tangent: I’m usually not that bad at knowing when others aren’t like me, but this post helps drive home how weird it was that before I got convinced to go vegetarian I would’ve been rather indifferent to any animal welfare at all (except maybe chimps?) on the grounds that they don’t have qualia (which I now find likely enough to think animal welfare is important). Yes this means that I would shrug about cat burning or etc. Yes, this means I didn’t assign any moral value to people’s pets aside from what they gave the person + rule utilitarianism about not hurting their property.
