The youtube channel Rational Animations has made video-forms of some well-known rationalist stories: Sorting Pebbles into Correct Heaps, The Goddess of Everything Else, and the Outcome Pump. I recently noticed that I didn’t get them when just watching the youtube video, I found Sorting Pebbles a cute story but I missed the point about AI, and the other two I just found slightly weird. Now after reading the sequences and the codex I do really appreciate these stories and find them meaningful. I think this indicates that even these stories have meaningful inferential distances to sympathetic but not-intruduced-to-rationality folks. Therefore, I’m doubting the effectiveness of these videos to convince those that aren’t yet familiar with the stories. Any anecdotes to the contrary?
