Community college are often seen as inferior to any university student. Why is that?
Anecdotally, some “college student-run” meme pages from University of California and other schools portray them as non-English speaking, class-failing, and talentless bunch who were admitted on the basis of economic background.
This is a harmful stereotype that impacts the lives of transfer students. Many chose to forgo a 4-year education for community college with the intention to save money and obtain their bachelor’s degree down the line.
In reality, former community college students have entered prestigious PhD, MD, JD programs and continued to succeed in their workplace.
How is such stereotype perpetuated and segregation normalized?
