I have very little practical experience with meditation, so please discount my opinion accordingly, but I believe that focusing exclusively on the technique and productivity, while ignoring the ethics and loving-kindness as unnecessary, may actually make the progress harder.
I believe this because meditation is essentially conditioning yourself to change your thought and reaction patterns, into more reflective and peaceful ones. Peaceful, because it is difficult to relax and reflect when you are stressed. But behaving ethically and practicing loving emotions is exactly what brings the inner peace.
(Maybe unless you are a clinical psychopath, in which case killing others does not cause you any stress. Dunno. This advice is aimed for average folks. I have no idea how psychopaths meditate or achieve enlightenment. Zen Buddhism might have some useful advice here.)
