Ants may or may not do internal search, but regardless, it seems like this phenomenon could be reproduced without any internal search. The ants implement a search overall via a pattern of behavior distributed over many ants. This “search” behavior has a weird corner case where they literally go into a death spiral, which is quite non-obvious from the basic behavior pattern.
