Does anybody have ideas on how we could test what kind of profiles are effective, without spending unreasonable amounts of effort in methodical trials?
Here’s a data point to contribute to this effort:
Myself, I try to “show, don’t tell” the attributes I value and wish to signal, such as creativity and intelligence. You are welcome to evaluate if I succeed at this:

I do get messaged occasionally with references to my profile, and usually also get good responses to my messages.
As to my target group’s profiles, I will usually expend more effort on an initial message if the profile shows abovementioned qualities, but I might still message slightly less convincing girls if they look good ;) Specific/shared interests are relatively unimportant to me and may only serve as a talking point.
At least here in Germany, OKCupid seems to have an unusually high proportion of very creative and interesting profiles, compared to just about any dating or social networking site I have tried.
