I read somewhere about the basis for consciousness or “self” being basically about being able to commit to acting towards a specific goal for a longer duration, instead of just being swamped by moment-to-moment sensory input. For example being able to carry a hot bowl of soup to table without dropping it midway when it starts burning one’s fingers.
